Ladder Stepping Flow
FreshThe core technique of the Ladder Method — stepping up through progressively harder GBP categories using Google Maps pin drops.
The Ladder Flow
Step-by-Step Breakdown
Phase 1: Setup
- Log into a fresh or aged Gmail account — must have no GBP or Maps activity
- Go to business.google.com and start creating a new listing
- Use the easy starting category (e.g., Repair Service)
- Request email verification — use your domain email (e.g.,
contact@yourdomain.shop) - Open the verification email but do NOT enter the code yet
Phase 2: First Pin Drop (Easy Category)
- Go to maps.google.com
- Search for your business address
- Click "Add a Missing Place"
- Enter:
- Name: Shortened (e.g., "Panara")
- Category: Repair Service
- Phone + Website: Must match the dashboard exactly
- Submit and move on — do not wait
Phase 3: Second Pin Drop (Intermediate Category)
- After the first edit is decided (accepted or not), do another pin drop
- Same address, same phone, same website
- Category: Contractor (stepped up from Repair Service)
- Name: Keep the same shortened name
- Submit
Phase 4: Third Pin Drop (Target Category)
- Do the final pin drop
- Category: Roofing Contractor (your target)
- Name: Now use more of the real name (e.g., "Panara Roofing")
- Same phone and website
- Submit
Phase 5: Verify and Go Live
- Enter the verification code from the email
- The listing should go live in Maps
- Merge any duplicate listings created during the stepping process

Rules That Cannot Be Broken
| Rule | Why |
|---|---|
| Phone number must match everywhere | Google uses this to tie listings together |
| Website URL must match everywhere | Same reason — consistency builds trust |
| Open the verification email | Google may track open rates |
| Pin drop AFTER code request | Timing matters for the hybrid method |
| Do not enter code until target category is set | The code is your final verification trigger |
What If It Gets Stuck?
If a pin drop sits in Pending for too long:
- Create a new email address in SiteGround
- Start a fresh verification with the new email
- Try the pin drop again with the full business name and target category
- Make sure all profile fields are filled out — incomplete profiles stall more
