Ladder Stepping Flow

Fresh

The core technique of the Ladder Method — stepping up through progressively harder GBP categories using Google Maps pin drops.

The Ladder Flow

Step-by-Step Breakdown

Phase 1: Setup

  1. Log into a fresh or aged Gmail account — must have no GBP or Maps activity
  2. Go to business.google.com and start creating a new listing
  3. Use the easy starting category (e.g., Repair Service)
  4. Request email verification — use your domain email (e.g., contact@yourdomain.shop)
  5. Open the verification email but do NOT enter the code yet

Phase 2: First Pin Drop (Easy Category)

  1. Go to maps.google.com
  2. Search for your business address
  3. Click "Add a Missing Place"
  4. Enter:
    • Name: Shortened (e.g., "Panara")
    • Category: Repair Service
    • Phone + Website: Must match the dashboard exactly
  5. Submit and move on — do not wait

Phase 3: Second Pin Drop (Intermediate Category)

  1. After the first edit is decided (accepted or not), do another pin drop
  2. Same address, same phone, same website
  3. Category: Contractor (stepped up from Repair Service)
  4. Name: Keep the same shortened name
  5. Submit

Phase 4: Third Pin Drop (Target Category)

  1. Do the final pin drop
  2. Category: Roofing Contractor (your target)
  3. Name: Now use more of the real name (e.g., "Panara Roofing")
  4. Same phone and website
  5. Submit

Phase 5: Verify and Go Live

  1. Enter the verification code from the email
  2. The listing should go live in Maps
  3. Merge any duplicate listings created during the stepping process

Example Ladder Paths

Roofing

Repair Service → Contractor → Roofing Contractor

Plumbing

Repair Service → Building Consultant → Plumber

Garage Door

Repair Service → Contractor → Garage Door Supplier → Garage Door

Towing

Repair Service → Roadside Assistance → Towing Service

These Are Examples

Every category is different. Some may need more or fewer steps. Reach out for guidance on specific categories if you are unsure.

Rules That Cannot Be Broken

RuleWhy
Phone number must match everywhereGoogle uses this to tie listings together
Website URL must match everywhereSame reason — consistency builds trust
Open the verification emailGoogle may track open rates
Pin drop AFTER code requestTiming matters for the hybrid method
Do not enter code until target category is setThe code is your final verification trigger

What If It Gets Stuck?

If a pin drop sits in Pending for too long:

  1. Create a new email address in SiteGround
  2. Start a fresh verification with the new email
  3. Try the pin drop again with the full business name and target category
  4. Make sure all profile fields are filled out — incomplete profiles stall more
